Hello, I am Dr Hayley Scanlon, a clinical psychologist.
You may have found yourself here as you would like some professional support to navigate life’s tricky seasons. It’s important for you to know a little bit about me before you decide if we could be a good fit for each other.
In my NHS role I work within a staff psychological support service offering psychological input to healthcare workers. This role involves proactive work at a systemic level to prevent burnout and stress, which in turn reduces the need for reactive support. I work privately too, with healthcare staff, children and families, and adults who need psychological support. I believe every individual can be supported to thrive in their work, school, and personal life despite the challenges they may face with their mental health.
The experience I have
I have been qualified as a clinical psychologist for 2 years and have worked within NHS and private sector organisations in a therapeutic and healthcare context for 11 years. I have an interest in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and have received specialist supervision whilst treating this.
I have specialist interests in burnout, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction- I even wrote my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) thesis on staff wellbeing in palliative care, which remains a continued interest of mine.
I have worked with adults, and children and families with a range of different problems, for example:
- Depression
- Low self esteem
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety
- Social anxiety
- Health anxiety
- Panic disorder
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Autism spectrum condition (ASD)
- Occupational burnout
- Relationship problems
How I work
I use evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help you understand the difficulties you are facing, the approaches that I use in my work are:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
- Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
- Cognitive Analytic Informed Therapy (CAT-informed)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
I offer these approaches in isolation or in an integrative way, dependent upon your psychological formulation and conversations with you.
Not only is the type of psychological therapy important, but research evidence actually suggests that the strength of our therapeutic relationship is an important predictor in meaningful change in therapy. It is important to me that our relationship feels like it works and is secure for you.
I will regularly check this out with you during therapy, and you may even have a sense from speaking to me before we start our work together if I am a good fit for you, or not.
I can offer sessions for any of my services remotely, or in-person from consulting rooms in Leeds and London.
What I can do for you
-
Individual psychological therapy
Psychological therapy works to develop your psychological understanding of yourself, we will notice and identify maintaining patterns. I aim to work alongside you to break out of unhelpful cycles by using a psychological formulation to target problem areas and try new coping strategies.
I seek to hold a nurturing, compassionate and safe space for you to explore and find what matters to you so that you can live a life worth living.
-
Psychological consultation
Psychological consultation may be helpful if you would like a few sessions to unpack individual problems that you are facing, your family system or team are struggling with. Psychological consultation helps with noticing, sense-making, and working through areas that are stuck.
-
Psychological assessment with recommendations
Psychological assessment can be carried out in a few sessions. This can be a short piece of work for you to better understand your problems. This can then be used to guide recommendations and intervention options and will be something you can use to inform other professionals of your difficulties and needs.
-
Clinical supervision
Clinical supervision is a formal process of professional support, reflection and learning that contributes to individual development. I aim to offer a restorative space to help you reflect on the technical and emotional aspects of your work. I am an accredited clinical supervisor with the University of Leeds. I supervise psychology and non-psychology professionals in their work.
